Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying

Cyrus the Great (c. 600 or 576 – 530 BC) figures in the Hebrew Bible as the patron and deliverer of the Jews. He is mentioned 23 times by name and alluded to several times more. According to the Bible, Cyrus the Great, king of the Achaemenid Empire, was the monarch who ended the Babylonian captivity.
King Cyrus of Persia defeated the Babylonians on Oct. 12, 539 BC.

God uses our government to carry out his will.  The government has rulership of all people.  We lost contact with God in our government when the officials of the government thought they could lead God's people without His Word.  When the government refuses to hear the Word of the Lord, people die.
People do not demand religion from the government, they demand the Word of God! God is what the people want! And God wants His people!
And the people say!  Treat us Right!

Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

God's plan of salvation is amazingly thought through.  God knows where everything is and who everybody is that will execute His thoughts which became His reality.  539 years before Jesus was born, God used a king named Cyrus who He spoke of 150 years before he was born. Isaiah wrote of him and Daniel spoke to him.

who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.” Isaiah 44:28 God calls Cyrus by name. Isaiah speaks of him before he was born.

Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

Cyrus calls Him God.   This is a proven truth that Every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess He is Lord.  Cyrus a pagan king who called God, God.  Not only did he call him God, but he also assisted the people of God in making a decree that they could return home if they wanted to.

And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

Anyone who does not want to return, assist the people who are leaving.

Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.

After hearing the announcement of king Cyrus, the priest and Levites were inspired to leave and return home.  Perhaps they pondered how they would make sense of it all, but hearing God speak through the king who is providing what will be needed, they were willing to leave knowing that God will meet their needs after 70 years of exile. Some were older, but that did not stop them.  Some may have been very young when they were exiled but heard of the release in 70 years while they were in captivity.  All in all, these were ready to go!

And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

Israel is organized.  God stirred the people to go home.  Pay attention to the stirring up of God.  People gave to assist.

Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;

70 years passed and they still had what belong to Israel.  I will restore said the Lord and he did.  God has a plan.  We do not have to lean to our own understanding even when are being corrected.  He promises to make things make sense.

Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

God is organized.

And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,

10 Thirty basons of gold, silver basons of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.

Counted by hand.

11 All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.

God counts and his number is correct.

This chapter of Ezra is so inspiring.  God reveals a king that was spoken of 150 years before he was born and called him by name.  Make no mistake about it, God has a schedule.  He has an appointed time that what he says will come to pass.  Here it is 150 years later a king was born.  King Cyrus defeated Nebuchadnezzar and the people of God were scheduled to go back to their homeland.  God used a king to assist his people.

 God's Schedule

It may seem ———God has you on hold

What he will do ———has already been told

There is nothing———— new under the sun

His will is planned ————and it shall be done

This is not the first time———God saw your need

He made a promise —————and he'll also keep

If we knew what—————— God already knows

We'll trust his word —————more than silver and gold.

Nothing will ever ——————catch him by surprise

You're his possession————- the apple of his eyes.
