PSALM 44
44 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
We heard how you made a way for our kin. The Word of God was been taught and the people who listened knew God through what they had heard. Perhaps they learned in school. History should be taught. Parents should teach the History of God. Businesses should teach the history of God. The church should teach the history of God. When we hear and hear, then we can remind God what He will listen to, is His Word.
2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
1. You drove the heathen out
2. You planted us
3. You afflicted the heathens little by little
4. You cast them out
You did several things to the heathen. You did it with your hand. You made things difficult for the heathen and you cast them out.
3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
You favored your people. You fought for them. They had nothing to brag about. Your right hand, your arm, and face drove them out.
4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
You are my God. You saved Israel.
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
If we win any, it will be because of you.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
I will not trust in my weapons, it takes You to save me.
7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
You save us from our present enemies. You silenced them that hated us.
8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
You are our praise all day long.
9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
But now you are not fighting for us.
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
Now we are running from the enemies. Those that hate us rob us.
11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
We are the enemy's prey. We are all over the place.
12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
We are sold for nothing. You did not make a profit when you sold us.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
You have made us to be disliked by our enemies. Our enemies think they have the upper hand now. We are shamed by them.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
We are your people and you made us people who others detest. When people see us, they shake their heads in disgrace at us.
15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
I am confused and my face shows that I am ashamed.
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
The talk of those who say evil about us is because of what the enemy has done and those who want to pay us back for what we have done.
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
Though you slay us, yet we call upon your name.
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
We look to you and we refuse to turn our back from trusting you.
19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
You have almost put us to death.
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
If we sinned by turning to other gods;
21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
You can check us to see if there be wickedness in us.
22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Because of You we are killed.
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
Hear our cry Oh Lord, help us!
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
Why do you ignore us when we call on you?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
Our soul is discouraged. We have no appetite.
26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
Come, Lord, help us! Do it for your namesake. Your reputation is on the line.
When you pray, tell the truth. The psalmist got God's attention by acknowledging him. Then he made his request known unto God.
I sent you prophets
Some you beat and some you killed
You thought you were doing them wrong
But it was always in my will
for it pleased me
when I saw my Son on the cross
I got Him back to Me
so that you would not be lost.
