Moses. This is the oldest Psalm

Book 4 of Psalm

90 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

Moses states that God has always been a provider of everything we need as long as He is Lord.  We will never have a need to leave Him for anything.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Before God created anything, there is God.

Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

When the children of Israel turned their backs on God, in unbelief, they were commanded to turn back toward the Red Sea.  This is where every man and woman 20 years older and up were to waste away.  This is the first time Many in Israel were left to die after four hundred years of safety.

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

A thousand years is as yesterday.  A thousand years is as counting a thousand years and calling it a day, behind God.  Also a thousand years is viewed as a very important position as to stand guard.  This means that even when you need support, late at night, God is there and He is like having a 1000 year of protection all in a day.

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

As strong water invades land, so is it when you sent the children of Israel away from your presence.  They were as people who were not conscience of their surroundings.  Their lives were compared to grass in the morning time.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

Morning grass is full and it is growing as the morning appears.  In the evening, it is cut down and little by little it is gone.  When we come into the presence of God we are as fresh grass, and full of dew.  We are growing by the minute.  The Word of God is our food and it nourishes us and we are growing at the right speed and time.  Then we see ourselves maturing and like the evening grass, we must be cut.  This is when we cast God's Word aside to support ourselves.  We no longer need God's advice.  Once we allow this to navigate our lives, we will be destroyed because we are disconnected from the source of life who is God.  We must always stay in the position of a child who is always in need of direction from his father.

For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

When we leave God's Word, God removes His hedge of protection and we are left for the wilds.  Ultimately we die.

Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

You know our repeated sins even the sins of what we think we are hiding.

For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

Our gift of day light is no good to us because of Your wrath.  Years come and go and we are speaking useless talk.  We talk about nothing all day long.  Nothing we think or say amounts to anything, because we refused to listen to You the source of all things.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

You promised us 70-80 years of life.  This means we can be active and vigilant for 70 to 80 years; years of productivity.  Yet we live long and we are feeble and weak; we soon die, and we have not accomplished anything.

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

No one knows the power of Your anger.  When you want to bless us because we reverence You, You use your power to destroy us because of our pride.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Lord show how to make use of our time left on earth.  Teach us to that we will take advantage of Your wisdom and get the results we want.

13 Return, O Lord, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

How long will we die like this?  Lord change Your mind and let us live.

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Don't delay Lord and have mercy on us; so that we may dance and sing and be happy all our days.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

Give us good days for every evil day we caused on ourselves.  And give us good years to remember.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

Show us Your approval by causing our hands to prosper in the things we do.

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Allow us to look like You.  Make us known to be Your people, yes make us like You and the world will know we belong to you.
