Ezekiel 5

Ezek 5:1 KJV

And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber's razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard: then take thee balances to weigh, and divide the hair.

God instructs Ezekiel to cut weigh and divide the hair from his head and beard.

Why did God use the hair to represent what he will do to His disobedient people?
Hair is the body's protection.  God wanted everything about man to be destroyed because doing wrong had no need of being protected.  Hair cut from the body can identify who a person is.  God lets us know that each person that will be destroyed can be identified by the smallest part of their body and there will be no confusion in punishing the wrong person.  Our own hair identifies us.  Hair tells the story of what we have done with our bodies.

Ezek 5:2 KJV

Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and third part thou shalt scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.

Take one-third of the hair and burn it: take a third of the hair and smite it with a knife and take one-third and scatter it in the wind; and those scattered in the wind, God will come after them with a sword.
Nebuchadnezzar will burn the city
Then those who try to fight will be killed.
Those who run will have no place to hide because they will be haunted down.  Some commentators say that the hair was placed in the drawing that Ezekiel drew was placed on the drawing to illustrate what God will do to each part of the blueprint drawn by Ezekiel.

God has permitted all of these things to happen to the children of Israel because of their refusal to walk away from sin.

Ezek 5:3 KJV

Thou shalt also take thereof a few in number, and bind them in thy skirts.

Some will be taken away by force.

Ezek 5:4 KJV

Then take of them again, and cast them into the midst of the fire, and burn them in the fire; for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel.

Some people will be killed by fire.

Ezek 5:5 KJV

Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.

Jerusalem is placed in the center of nations and countries that are close to it.

Ezek 5:6 KJV

And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them.

Jerusalem has sinned more than the nations and countries around her that have never met me as God.

Ezek 5:7 KJV

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you;

Because Israel behaved worse than anyone in the area;

Ezek 5:8 KJV

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, am against thee, and will execute judgments in the midst of thee in the sight of the nations.

God said I am coming against you Myself.  I am the one who will fight you.

Ezek 5:9 KJV

And I will do in thee that which I have not done, and whereunto I will not do any more the like, because of all thine abominations.

God told his disobedient people that what He will do to them He has never done before, and He will not do anything like this again, because of all you have done wrong and would not stop.

When we come to Jesus, it is as if we enter into the classroom of God.  In God's classroom, you will be protected from the first day to eternity.  All that is required is to stay in the Word of God.  Without the Word of God, there is no protection.

Ezek 5:10 KJV

Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds.

People will be so hungry they will eat each other;  God will make sure the Words He is warning against His people will be carried out and the nation known as my people will be all over the place.

Ezek 5:11 KJV

Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any pity.

Because of the disobedience of My people, God will not overlook or feel sorry for what He is going to do to punish His people for the abominations they committed in His face.

Ezek 5:12 KJV

A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.

Verse 12 is the same as verse 2.  God is making sure he repeats what He will do.

Ezek 5:13 KJV

Thus shall mine anger be accomplished, and I will cause my fury to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the LORD have spoken it in my zeal, when I have accomplished my fury in them.

Once my judgment against sin has accomplished what I have spoken, I will be comforted knowing that I kept My Word against people who do not keep theirs.

Ezek 5:14 KJV

Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that pass by.

Ezek 5:15 KJV

So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.

This will teach the nations around you that I am God.  I do not tolerate sin.  They will learn that if I do not tolerate sin from My own, I won't tolerate sin from anyone.

Ezek 5:16 KJV

When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:

Again, I will send death by famine and I will increase famine and the bread you will find will be limited.

Ezek 5:17 KJV

So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.

Famine
Evil beast
Disease
Loss of blood
The sword will be brought against you, for your refusal to live by My Word.  I am God and I have told you.
