Jeremiah 47
Jeremiah 47:1-7 (KJV)
1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.
Before Pharoah fought the Philistines God spoke to Jeremiah of the Philistine's fate.
2 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
When the Philistines see the army that God chose to attack them, their men will cry and all others will.
3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong [horses], at the rushing of his chariots, [and at] the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to [their] children for feebleness of hands;
When the fathers hear the sound of the horses running toward them, the fathers will leave their own children for fear of the army.
4 Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, [and] to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.
God will not only destroy the Philistines, He will destroy all he came to assist them in the fight.
5 Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off [with] the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?
You will see the pain of Gaza, you will see the pain of Ashkelon and its people: how long will you morn? The Philistineswere known for their height and many feared that, God did not. The surrounding areas near the Philistines were effected by the judgement of God against the the Philistines. The lesson to learn for life is do not have a reputation for being wrong and do not dwell close to people who are known for mistreating people.
6 O thou sword of the LORD, how long [will it be] ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.
God speaks to the sword as if He is being comical. The Philistines ignored God and He is showing them that He has no regard for how they feel concerning the pain they suffer.
Our bodies gives indication of things that are not good for us; and if we constantly ignore signs of the body that indicates we need to turn from what does not work in us properly, the body will shut dowm. So it is with God We are all members of God's body; when we are not functioning according to the good of the whole body, God will cut or remove us so that we will not hurt the members of the body who are functioning properly, in order to save the body.
7 How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.
The Lord responds to His own question. The sword will carry out the orders of God until completion.
