Psalm 11

11 In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

David says I trust God.  Why are you giving me bad advice as to run from my enemies to hide?

For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

Then you tell me to look at the wicked.  You describe the wicked to be bending their bow, you say they make ready to shoot me, and you say they will shoot at me unaware while aiming at my heart.

If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

Why allow your life to be destroyed?  How will the righteous go on?  This advice came from the heart of people who wanted David to protect himself.  They wanted David to hide so that Israel would still have a king.

Another way it could be viewed is: The foundation is the Word of God.  When we ignore God's Word we do not destroy God's Word, we destroy what we base our lives on when we do not consider God before we build.  If the foundation which is the Word of God is not put in place, we cannot build anything.

The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

David responds:  The Lord has not moved.  God is still where he said He would be, sitting on his throne.  His eyelids are always open and see what going on on earth.  He is never asleep.  God is wide awake.  Since eyelids make tears and it keeps our eyes from becoming dry: this shows that God is not happy when He sees man disobeying Him.  Although God is not necessarily crying, His eyes are moist while holding back tears from seeing how we hurt ourselves.

The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

The Lord uses those who are right with Him.  However, the people who refuse to submit to Him and loves hurting people are hated of God from the core of His heart.

Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

When God gives a drink, he will pour into the cup/ or give a trophy to the wicked; he will give snares or traps, sulfur (gun powder), and violent wind.  Snares are traps set so that man is unable to move forward; fire and brimstone are guns used by men to protect themselves.  If we do not allow God to protect us, God allows us to protect ourselves with gun powder, which will hurt us because we are not created to cover ourselves: Violent winds are extremely bad storms that will cause many to die.  When we refuse to listen to the Word of God, we destroy ourselves by choice.

For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

David ends the conversation by saying, I do not have to hide.  God loves me.  I love what is right.  The face of God shines in my direction.  I have nothing to fear, so I have no reason to run.

Song

Oh Lord I can't protect myself

Oh Lord I can't protect myself

Oh Lord I can't protect myself

I need the Word of God to watch over me.
