1 King16
1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani, against Baasha, saying:
God speaks to Baasha through Jehu.
2 “Inasmuch as I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and have made My people Israel sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins,
Baasha receives the same word that was given to Jeroboam. Baasha disobeyed God and received the punishment that was given to Jeroboam.
3 surely I will take[a] away the posterity of Baasha and the posterity of his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
When God judges the sin of someone before us, and we repeat the same sin, we receive the same judgment. We must learn, when we commit the same crime, God will judge justly. We receive the same punishment.
4 The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Baasha and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the fields.”
Jeroboam's fate is now yours.
5 Now the rest of the acts of Baasha, what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
6 So Baasha [b]rested with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah. Then Elah his son reigned in his place.
7 And also the word of the Lord came by the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha and his house, because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord in provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he killed them.
In 2021, we must learn from the judgment of God. Many people are misled into thinking, Jesus put an end to punishing our sins. We commit the same sins and we live as if we do not have to face charges. We are to study the past to understand what choices keep us with the freedom we desire. Jesus' assignment was to free us from the thought of sin. When we go beyond his directions and commit the crimes we will be judged as criminals.
Elah Reigns in Israel
8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel, and reigned two years in Tirzah.
Elah learns from his dad. God has spoken against this house. Elah knows what happened to his father, but he still wants the power his dad had.
9 Now his servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against him as he was in Tirzah drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, steward[c] of his house in Tirzah.
Elah's employees are plotting behind his back. Like a coward, he finds him drunk and kills Elah.
Another king dead in Israel while Asa is still king in Judah.
10 And Zimri went in and struck him and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place.
Zimri kills and becomes king of Israel. Since Jesus came and fulfilled his assignment, we do these crimes in our minds. Jesus came to destroy the thoughts we commit before we carry them out.
11 Then it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he was seated on his throne, that he killed all the household of Baasha; he did not leave him one male, neither of his relatives nor of his friends.
God is watching all of this play itself out. He does not stop it. We are responsible for everything we do. When we dismiss God, we set ourselves up to destroy one another.
12 Thus Zimri destroyed all the household of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which He spoke against Baasha by Jehu the prophet,
13 for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, by which they had sinned and by which they had made Israel sin, in provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their [d]idols.
14 Now the rest of the acts of Elah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
Nothing changed in Israel. This is Israel's 5th king and all we see is the death of a throne that is absent from God.
Zimri Reigns in Israel
15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri had reigned in Tirzah seven days. And the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.
Asa is reigning in Judah for 27 years. While in Israel, they are on their 5th king. Zimiri reigned for 7 days.
16 Now the people who were encamped heard it said, “Zimri has conspired and also has killed the king.” So all Israel made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that day in the camp.
The people of Israel did not accept Zimri as king. While he made himself king, they crowned Omri to death row.
17 Then Omri and all Israel with him went up from Gibbethon, and they besieged Tirzah.
Omri appointed king, goes to take the throne from Zimri.
18 And it happened, when Zimri saw that the city was [e]taken, that he went into the citadel of the king’s house and burned the king’s house [f]down upon himself with fire, and died,
Zimri said I will burn this house down before you take it from me even if I have to kill myself. And he did. Zimri was king 7 whole days.
19 because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he had committed to making Israel sin.
God does not violate the orders of a king. He does not overstep his boundaries.
20 Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and the treason he committed, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
Israel king of 7 days is over. More details will be discovered in the Book of Chronicles when we get there.
Omri Reigns in Israel
21 Then the people of Israel were divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king, and half followed Omri.
Israel has more kings. Two this time. half wanted Tibni and the other wanted Omri. God is watching. Israel has added even more sins. They refuse to turn to God. Lord, help us to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith at all.
22 But the people who followed Omri prevailed over the people who followed Tibni the son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri reigned.
Only one king can rule Israel. Omri won andTibni life was taken. Israel commits more sins. This lesson should teach us to fear God. But when we don't know God we don't fear God.
23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king over Israel, and reigned twelve years. Six years he reigned in Tirzah.
Asa is still king after 38 years. Israel is on king number 6? Omri kills to get his position. Will he outlast the others who were before him?
24 And he bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver; then he built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, Samaria,[g] after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill.
Zimri burned the king's house. So, Omri builds a new city called Samaria.
25 Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all who were before him.
Omri was eviler than the late kings of Israel before him. This displeases God. When we continue to have our own way, death is inevitable.
26 For he walked in all the ways of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.[h]
Kings lead people into sin. We see the king. Imagine the people who hold him in high esteem. The teacher's behavior is responsible for the outcome of the students.
27 Now the rest of the acts of Omri which he did, and the might that he showed, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
More details are in the book of Chronicles concerning Omri.
28 So Omri rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. Then Ahab his son reigned in his place.
Omri became king when Asa had been king in Judah for 38 years. How long he himself reign? It appears that Ahab was king in the same year his father was king along with Asa of Judah. This makes me conclude he died the same year he became king.
Ahab Reigns in Israel
29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri became king over Israel; and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years.
Omri dies and Ahab becomes king. This is Israel's 7th king. Ahab rules for 22 years.
30 Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him.
Ahab did evil just like his father Omri. A nation that does not obey God is a dynasty of death.
31 And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.
Ahab started out WRONG from the start. He denied obeying God by going straight to a god Israel knew was a sin. Ahab thought nothing of it.
32 Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
He sets up an altar for Baal a well known old god.
33 And Ahab made a [i]wooden image. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.
Ahab is the worse king of Israel so far.
34 In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation [j]with Abiram his firstborn, and with his youngest son Segub he set up its gates, according to the word of the Lord, which He had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun.
Israel is coming apart. Without God, we will do what somebody else did. They failed we fail also. Israel is on their 7th king.
