Job 34

34 Furthermore Elihu answered and said,

Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

Elihu refers to those who are listening to be wise men.  He sounds sure of himself.  Previously he said these men lack the wisdom to correct Job.  Now he seems to need their approval or support.

Elihu is speaking to Job's friends about Job.

For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.

The ear filters words as the mouth taste food.    I am a witness of what I heard Job say.

Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.

Let us make a list of what is right or wrong.  Let us set standards among ourselves.

For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.

After all, Job has said, he is righteous: and God has taken away his understanding of what is good or bad.

Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.

Elihu is mocking Job's words.  I have done nothing wrong and I have wounds that are not justifiable.

What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

Job ignores reasoning from us and ignores what we say like a person who drinks water.  Nothing we say about him is bothering him.

Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.

That is what wicked people do.  They do not admit they are wrong.

For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

These are the words of Job's understanding of what is happening to him.  Job has no understanding of what is going on with God.

10 Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.  He pumps the older men's ego.

Listen to me, God does not tolerate sin.  And to treat Job like he said he is being done by God, would be a sin on God's part.

11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

Man will reap what he sows.

12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

God does not do wrong.

13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?

Who hired God?

14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

If God decides to destroy man he can do it.

16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

Now listen to me.

17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?

Can you condemn God?

18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?

Can you question a king?

19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

Can you question God who does not have respect of person?

20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.

At God's rebuke, man will die.

21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.

God sees everything a man does.

22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

God sees through the dark.

23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.

God will sentence right.  Man will have no reason to second guess his judgment.

24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.

He will destroy mighty men.  He tells the older men Job is going down.

25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

God will kill anyone who crosses him.

26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

He does what he does in your face.

27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:

If you disobey God he will destroy you.

28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.

He does this to the mighty so that the poor and will come to him.

29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

When God says peace, who can start trouble?  When he is hidden from us, who can find him?  Corporately or privately?

30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

He removes the hypocrites so the people will be protected from harm.

31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:

I deserve what happened to me and I will change my bad habits.

32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

Teach me what I need to know, if I have done wrong I will stop.

33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.

You men of standards how do you find Job?  What you already know is what is going to happen to him.  I will not cast my vote.  What do you have to say, old men?  OR Could Elihu be directing his comments to Job?  You say you are right?  God will settle the score, even if you agree with Him or not!  I can't choose for you, you have to choose to do right on your own.  So speak up Job!!!!

34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.

Old men, you answer me.  I know you agree with me.

35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

Job is wrong.

36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.

I hope God does more damage to Job.  He is as a wicked man.

37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

He refuses to make corrections, he is so stubborn.

Sing or Say

Job 34

Elihu the young man speaks

But he doesn’t recognize Job

His words are directly aimed

At Job’s friends who are old.

He takes the words of the innocent

And he twists them nice and tight

His focus is on the older men so

To hear them yell that’s right!

Job who is innocent

Does not have a chance

They speak if Job is not there

Not giving Job a glance

Elihu talks loud and long

No one else said a word

He said Job is a guilty man

And denied Job to say a word.

Now the old men are as the jury

They were asked to make the call

Elihu said if Job doesn’t change

A deeper hole I pray he falls.
