42 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
As a male deer who is extremely, extremely thirsty is the way the psalmist describes his thirst to be in the presence of God.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
When we work with ungodly people, dine with people we love who are divided by religious views, or in a place where there is no one who understands your hunger to be with people who love God's Word the way you do, can leave you in a desperate situation.
3 My tears have been my meat day night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
You can love the Word of God, so much so it makes you shed tears when you are absent from a place you have been where you know God and His people were gathered together. To hear a teacher talk about God in His truth is immeasurable and very hard to find.
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
To be taught well by a good teacher is priceless; anyone who ever had that experience can identify with remembering what it was like then and you are far from it at this moment in life and you are desperate for that type of teaching.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
When it gets like that you may have to talk to yourself as if your soul is unattached to your mouth. Your soul is so down, it took your own mouth to encourage your very being.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
The memory of God's presence is better than never to have had the memory or experience.
7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
I am near where the water is pouring hard on me. I know you are allowing the water to come down. I feel like I am drowning. Since I know you know where I am help me! I feel this way being so far from you.
8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
In the midst of my struggle, God puts a song in me about Him.
9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
Where are you, Lord? My enemies won't stop.
10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
Still, my enemy says, where is your God, the God you long for.
11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
The psalmist tells his soul again to hope in God.
I wanna be where you are Lord
I wanna follow your lead
That's where I wanna be
where you go take me
Lord this is my plea
