Jeremiah 5

God is angry at what makes us angry.  We hate being done wrong by others and so God hates it when others do us wrong. We are limited in what we can do to stop the evil of the world.  However, there is one thing we can do and that is don't be a part of the ways of the world.  If you commit to something good, keep your word.  Don't make promises you will not keep.

Jeremiah 5:1-31 (KJV) 1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be [any] that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

Evil was so out of control in Jerusalem until God told Jerimiah to go search the city and see if they can find one person that is seeking my word and if you can find one honest man, let me know and I will pardon the whole city. At one time God told Abraham to find 50  righteous and that number was too big; Abraham insisted that God bring down the number.   Evil is so out of control doing this time that God just asked for one man!  If one man can make a difference, God said I'll take that. Go where there is a lot of people or few, Go!

2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

God knew that there were a whole lot of phony people who said they knew him but he was not counting them.

3 O LORD, [are] not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, [but] they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

God was and is still good to his people. God has brought judgment on his people, he has tried to correct them and they still refuse to listen. People refuse to learn God's word.

4 Therefore I said, Surely these [are] poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, [nor] the judgment of their God.

Jeremiah went to the poor people and said that perhaps they have an excuse because they are poor and that is the reason why they don't know God's word.

5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, [and] the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, [and] burst the bonds.

Jerimiah decided to go to the well-known people and they too refused to learn the Word of God. It seemed that the more people knew the more they used things to break the laws of God.

6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, [and] a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, [and] their backslidings are increased.

Because the people who should know God refused to obey God, God set up an evil army to attack his people because they refuse to learn his ways. Judah's own disobedience caused this attack they brought upon themselves.

7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by [them that are] no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.

The word of the Lord asked how can I forgive you when you continue in sin?  I took care of your children and they left me and got together and went to the houses of the prostitutes.  Anytime we are drawn to anything or person without the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of God, we have made that person a god.  Which in fact is no god at all.

8 They were [as] fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

God fed his people well and after they had eaten, they were full enough to go and commit adultery.

9 Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

The Lord said shall I punish you for the things that you have done? Will this make me satisfied to judge you for your evil?

10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they [are] not the LORD'S.

God told the enemy to destroy the walls of his people. He said to take away their protection since they are not mine.

11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

My people have dealt very despicable against me said it the Lord.

12 They have belied the LORD, and said, [It is] not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

My people have disapproved my word, and said it is not my word; and evil shall not come upon us; and neither shall we be punished for the things we have done.

13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word [is] not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

The profits are a bag of wind and what they said would not happen will happen to them too.

14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Jeremiah the words that you speak will be as fire and the people who disobey me will be as wood; the words that you say will destroy them.

15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it [is] a mighty nation, it [is] an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

Tell the children of Judah that I am sending an old army who knows how to make war; you do not understand their language and this nation will destroy you.

16 Their quiver [is] as an open sepulchre, they [are] all mighty men.

Their ammunition is a graveyard they are strong men.

17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, [which] thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

All the food that you planted and prepared for your children and you hired guards to surround your gardens; these people will eat it up themselves.

18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

I will destroy many of you but not all of you.

19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these [things] unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land [that is] not yours.

When this happens, you will ask the question why has god forsaken us? and the answer will be, I did to you what you did to me.

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

Make this known to everybody that are called by my name,

21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

Listen people of God who do not read his word; who have eyes but can't see and have ears and won't hear

22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand [for] the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

I made the sand to be still so the waters of the sea would not drown you; I did it for you and you do not fear me neither do you shake at my presence?

23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

You are my people and you are very stubborn; you have rebelled against my word and love me.

24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

You have not spoken and said that I am God;  you do not say God gave rain in its due season and God made sure that the harvest has what it needs for us to have food.

25 Your iniquities have turned away these [things], and your sins have withholden good [things] from you.

The food I provided will not be provided for you and you are the reason why it is like that. I will not give you anything good.   All of this is happening is because of your sins.

26 For among my people are found wicked [men]: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

You are some wicked people, you plot, you plan, and wait to carry out the ungodly deeds you made up in your mind to trap other people.

27 As a cage is full of birds, so [are] their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

Imagine a cage full of birds, that is what you look like to me: all the stuff that you have packed in your houses looks like bird's poop because you stole the good you have.

28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

You are rich and you stand out: you overlook the people I told you to take care of and still you have a lot of stuff; but you neglected the people who needed your support.

29 Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

Shall I pretend I didn't see what you did? Shall I not be angry at people who act like you do?

30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

A shocking and horrible thing has been done in the land that I gave you.

31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love [to have it] so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

The prophets tell lies and the priest makes sure you are punished if you do not obey them;  the sad thing about all of this is, that you enjoy being treated like that.  My question to you is what good will come out of all of this in the end?
