  1. Chapter 31 has left me at this time feeling like I lack an understanding of God's future agenda.  However, I will do the best I can to convey what I think`    A.
God is saying to us according to Jeremiah 31.

Jeremiah 31:1-40 (KJV)

1 At the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah still has the pen in hand.  God continues to tell Jeremiah to write in his book more words about His people's future.  God told Israel, that His punishment was for good.  Israel continued to sin. I want you to know that I am God and I have a remedy to show you how to behave yourself.  I know those who are mine and I will show you that you can live right.  I know your heart but as a father who loves and chastises his children to bring corrections, so will I do the same.  Understanding this, let us move on.

2 Thus saith the LORD, The people [which were] left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; [even] Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.

God said I sought Israel and I found him alive after many died.  I sought Israel to tell him he will live with me forever and that things are about to change.

3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, [saying], Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Jeremiah said God started speaking the way He sounded from the beginning.  Jeremiah could tell God was reminiscing. God expressed to Jeremiah while Jeremiah was taking notes saying Yes, I loved you then and I love you now, and I used my lovingkindness to draw you to me.  God said I never stop loving you even if I had to punish your wrong.

4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.

God said I will build you and you will have nothing lacking.  God did not call them what they had once been in disobedience.  He gave them a fresh name,  He called them a virgin.  He said no longer will you wear rags; you will be well dressed and you will not remember your past and neither will I; and you will dance and have a good time.

5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat [them] as common things.

You will do what you did as planters before I removed you and you will plant again and eat your own food and no one will rob you of your hard work.  Work will be a normal way of life and it will not be strange to see you gather your own fruit of your labor.

6 For there shall be a day, [that] the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.

You will be very organized.  A leader will say let's us go to the house of the Lord and you will be glad to go.  He will say let us go to meet our God.

7 For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.

Let the city know who you are.  Sing and praise the Lord so that they may know I am your God.

8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, [and] with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.

I am going to bring all people; the lame, blind, pregnant, and the woman who is about to give birth:  it will be a large number of people.  I will bring them from the north and the coastal area.  I will not leave anyone out.

9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim [is] my firstborn.

You will hear crying and people earnestly praying and I will lead them:  I will allow them to walk near pleasant water on a path that is set for them, when they travel, they will not fall because the land is clear; I am a father of Israel and Ephraim is my son from the hand of Joseph.

10 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare [it] in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd [doth] his flock.

Hear what I say, everyone, and tell the news that I am God and you are my people who were scattered but now you are back together as Mine.

11 For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of [him that was] stronger than he.

For the Lord paid the price and brought His children back from the enemy who was stronger than they were.

12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

Sing and eat and have a good time is on the list of what God is telling Jeremiah to write in his book.

13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

The young and old men will dance, the virgins will dance and no thought of the past life will be remembered.

14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.

The priest and the people will be satisfied with the goodness of the Lord.

15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, [and] bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they [were] not.

Rachel weeps in Ramah because her children were dead.

16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

I will command no tears and you will have no need to cry because there will be nothing that will need tears: your work will be awarded and you will come back to the land I promised.

17 And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.

What you hoped for will be manifested.

18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus]; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou [art] the LORD my God.

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon [my] thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

God's goodness made me realize how stupid I was.

20 [Is] Ephraim my dear son? [is he] a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.

I looked at Ephraim (My people) and shook my head; my stomach turned for him:  I said I will have mercy on Ephraim and let him live.

21 Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, [even] the way [which] thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.

Place signs and tell others how to find me and come home to the cities that are now yours.

22 How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.

Many people say they do not understand this verse. I can only say what I understand.  When God saw the stress the people were in and they were doing the wrong things trying to find solutions; they needed a guide.  But, the guide was in the midst of them but ignored.  She was that woman who was always overlooked by some.  What I believe God is saying is, I am putting directions in the least likely people you have cast to the side for thousands of years.  I am using anyone who will yield themselves to Me.  Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity  or status, God is going to put the directions that we need in vessels that made themselves available to Him no matter who they may be.

23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, [and] mountain of holiness.

God is saying I can hear the word of the street now before it happens, God is Good!  My people will finally know that I am Just.

24 And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they [that] go forth with flocks.

Men will have cattle in the cities.

25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.

NO time for lack, there will be no time to waste and I will renew the man of sorrow.

26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.

Jeremiah said I thought about all God was saying and my sleep was sweet.

27 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.

God said he will have a house full of people and beasts.

28 And it shall come to pass, [that] like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.

You will see another side of Me, said the Lord.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.

You will not hear it being said daddy ate a grape that was sour and now we have a toothache.

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

If you do wrong then you will be the one who will suffer the consequences.

31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

I have made up My mind, said the Lord, I have a new covenant!  I will make a new agreement with My people.

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day [that] I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

The new covenant will not be like the old, that My people broke.  I was a provider and they did Me wrong.  God designed the covenant and we did not do our part.  God made the rules and we broke them.

33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

This time I will put my Word in your heart instead of on a tablet.  You will know what to do at all times because it will be in you.  You will know right from wrong.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

I have put my word in you.  You know what is right and what is wrong.  All the sins you have done are all forgotten and I have forgiven you.  We are starting over.

35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, [and] the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts [is] his name:

I am God and I made the sun, moon, and stars:

36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, [then] the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

If the sun, moon, or stars do not operate, then I will forget about being your God.

37 Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

If anyone can measure what I created, I will be done with my people.

38 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.

A place will built and it will be huge in my name built by My people.

39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.

God said it will be so Big it will be measured from one city to another.

40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, [shall be] holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

All the land that had dead bodies will now be Mine, and the land will no longer be called a graveyard; it will be holy to me and what is Mine will never be removed.
